The position of naturalist-guide is a professional job, which implements the educational mission of Camp Denali and North Face Lodge. A naturalist-guide is:
A Teacher of Experiential Learning in one of the greatest outdoor classrooms in
the world. One will encounter a wide variety of guest expectations, from single-mindedhiking enthusiasts and those who have come expecting “just a place to stay”to those who have come specifically to expand their knowledge of the natural and cultural heritage of this sub-arctic ecosystem. A naturalist's goals are to use creative techniques to excite each of them to learn about Alaska and Denali'sunique heritage, to appreciate the complexities of all ecosystems and to understand the value of protecting them.
A Backcountry Hiking Guide with leadership skills, training and experience in how to keep people (sometimes novices) safe in inclement weather, bear habitat, and trail-less backcountry terrain.
A Trained Driver responsible for safely transporting people in a van or bus over the unpaved, mountainous park road.
Even though we operate our active learning program for just 14 weeks each summer, working as a naturalist-guide is considered a career-building opportunity, not just a summer job. Because of the significant on-the-jobtraining and independent study necessary for proficiency, we request a commitment to at least three seasons' employment as a naturalist-guide.
